Reminder: Supply List Requests
Stephen needs every team (or teacher if you did this independently) to send an email or attachment to an email of all requests you made to parents regarding bringing supplies to school that are different in any way from the district supply list. That includes if you told parents not to bring items from the district list.
Reminder: Flocabulary
Please take a moment and contact Hartley to let her know if you use Flocabulary and would like the subscription to include your class.

Schedule update
Note that the schedule for Lunchtime Recess and Lunch has been modified and may look like it is not enough time for staff lunches. It actually will be the same schedule as last year. Students are required by OSPI/State to have no less than a 25 minute lunch period. In our schedule that will include the transition to the cafeteria and in line. So the recess times will be as seen on the schedule and the 5 minutes remaining that teachers are at lunch will be the same as usual. Para's on the playground will be getting students in line and readied for lunch. We have to show that the lunch is 25 minutes and at the same time you have 30 minutes for lunch.
Speaking of recesses, I have to make a modification to the AM/PM additional recess. The whole topic of recess has been quite confusing as expectations have been shared and then modified over the course of negotiations. So, what I have been told is that the second recess is optional and that teams/teachers can determine if they wish to take kids out or not. I have revised the expectations below in the original blog entry. The changes are in red.

Start up Supplies
As you all may know this year we have been unexpectedly responsible for providing students with a good majority of their school supplies that, in the past, they would normally supply. Due to this and how much each grade is needing to make sure the kids get what they need for the 2016-2017 school year it is taking a HUGE hit on our budget. Unfortunately this means we are going to have to split the order up between this current year budget and next years budget which starts September first. This means that you will only have some of the supplies your requested before school begins and then receive the remainder of them the week after school starts. Below is a list of the supplies that will be here before school starts and their estimated arrival times. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!

Master Schedule and Recess Changes
At the end of last year, all elementary schools added an additional 15 minutes of recess at grades K-2. The feedback received as a result of that additional time was generally positive. As we move into this coming school year, we will be replicating the changes at grades K-2 in grades 3-5. This will mean that all elementary schools in the district will benefit from up to 40 minutes of recess time for grades K-5.
The master schedule will now show a column for Lunch Recess and a column for AM/PM Recess. We are looking at the schedule to identify what times are available for AM and PM recesses. We are also looking at the length of instructional blocks and will list initial times where the second recess of the day can take place.
To get us going strong from the beginning, here are a few expectations around the implementation of this district-wide recess.
- The 15 minute AM/PM recess is optional. This means the recess can take place as each team sees fit as long as it does not exceed 15 minutes per day. Note that there is a perception issue that you should be aware of and take into consideration when implementing the recesses. Be thinking about equity across the grade. When some classes go regularly and others rarely go it invites questions and concerns from parents.
- The 15 minute AM/PM recess is to be supervised by the teachers in the grade level. There is one exception: If you have an intervention group or study hall during that time, one teacher may stay inside while the other teachers go outside. This time is not to be used as an extension of planning time or as a personal 15 minute break.
- Supervision of students is the priority when outside. That means moving around frequently and interacting with students.
- Communicate your plan for recess with parents so they know how many minutes of recess they can expect their child to get each week.
